DAVID EVERETT, Painter
I work primarily in water-soluble oil on canvas and board, large and small. Though I do not try to emulate specific artists, I initially drew inspiration from the Canadian painter Tom Thompson and members of the associated Group of Seven. I was particularly drawn to their ability to capture the essence of places they know by heart, and have striven to do so myself. My subject matter includes the hills of northwest Connecticut, mid-coast Maine and Rhode Island rivers and shorelines. Thematically my work has remained fairly consistent over the past eight years or so, primarily depicting nature and a fascination with the role of light.

My paintings are about experiencing nature in all seasons and at different times of day, expressing moods and feelings associated with being in familiar yet mysterious and evolving places, chronicling change, as manmade landscapes return to some semblance of their original forms. Shapes, patterns and colors are expressions not only of what I see at a given time, but of what I remember, sometimes evoking distant memories of place. Sometimes imagination takes over and the result is a hybrid of the
real and the fanciful – or pure abstraction.
