VALERIE BRETL, Mosaic Artist
Mosaic art is not only a world of color and shape, it is also the most beautiful record of the best images and traditions of mankind throughout history. Globally, mosaic art is revitalizing and becoming the preferred medium of contemporary art collectors. Mosaic art endures extreme age and exposure to the elements and will become artifacts of the future as it has been for ages.
After earning a Master of Fine Arts degree in New York City and raising a family, I became a professional mosaic artist in 2000. I have created over one hundred mosaics, received international awards and exhibited in national art museums. My mosaics are expressionistic representations of remembered images and nature subjects seen in north Florida, where my winter studio is located. During summers, I am the proprietor of Mosaic Arts gallery in Rhode Island where I design three dimensional mosaics in the adjoining studio. The materials I use are alchemist made stoneware, imported ceramics and re-purposed vintage china. The “Stone Mosaics“ are made with marble, travertine, granite and onyx. My recent mosaics include Italian smalti, stained glass and minerals. While my mosaics have received acclaim, my greater joy is reviving an age old art form and seeing it become part of residential art collections, museum exhibits and public art installations. |
